Strawberry Mug Pies
2 pounds of fresh strawberries, hulled and quartered
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
pinch of salt
1 thawed puff pastry sheet, cut into 4 circles/squares to sit on the mugs
1 egg, lightly beaten
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
In a baking dish, combine strawberries, sugar, flour, salt and mix to combine. Either divide the mixture into 4 mugs or ramekins, or keep it in the baking dish. Place cut puff pastry either over top of the mug or ramekin, or on a baking sheet, and brush with beaten egg. Place the mugs on a baking sheet and place in the oven (or just place the baking dish and sheet with pastry in the oven). Bake for 25-30 minutes, checking once in between to stir strawberries and see how the pastry is coming along. When pastry is golden and puffed, remove and let cool to the touch (about 5 minutes) then serve (or spoon the strawberries into the mug and top with pastry).
Some of these mug meals are easy enough for the kids to make themselves
If there's one thing better than eating your favorite meal, it's eating that meal prepared "quick and easy" in an adorable mug. We already know that mugs are the dirty little secret to whipping up microwaved desserts like brownies. But take a closer look, and you'll discover a whole new culinary world just waiting for you to set the timer on you microwave.
It's not lazy — it's efficient. From pancakes to prawns, chilaquiles to chicken potpie, your on-the-go noshing just got a whole lot more baller:
Breakfast
1. Vegan tofu scramble recipe
Because ain't nobody got time to press and fry! Just mix these guys together, and you're 60 seconds away from a party in your mouth.
- 1/2 block firm tofu, crumbled
- 1 Tbsp. soy sauce
- 3/4 cup nutritional yeast (aka "vegan crack")
- 1/2 Tbsp. lemon juice
- 1 bunch spinach
- 1 handful 'shrooms
- Seasonings (I use salt, pepper, garlic powder, and turmeric), to taste
Mix it all together and nuke for 1 to 2 minutes.
Lunch/Dinner
Let's cook some rice in the microwave. Here's how:
- Put 1/2 cup of rice in (guess what?) a mug.
- Pour enough water in the mug to cover the rice completely.
- Cover with plastic wrap, then nuke for 7 minutes.
Ta-da! Now just throw a handful of frozen stir-fry veggies in the mix with a splash of soy sauce and nuke for 1 more minute, and you've got yourself homemade goodness in a mug. Tip: Drown your rice and veggies in Sriracha sauce and add bean sprouts for a spicy, crunchy twist.
Dessert
Let's face it: All warm, sweet baked goods would taste better with a conveniently placed handle. Mug handles keep us from eating fistfuls of cake with both hands … which can only help animals in the long run. We vegans ain't crazy. We just love dessert!
Brownie Sundae
We saved the mother lode of chocolatey scrumptious fudginess for last. Vegans need antioxidants too, right?
- 4 Tbsp. flour
- 4 Tbsp. sugar
- 2 Tbsp. cocoa powder
- 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
- 2 Tbsp. water
- Dash salt
This is the ONLY way I satisfy my chocolate craving. It's worth waiting the mere 60 seconds it takes to cook this in the microwave. Just mix, nuke, scoop some vegan ice cream on top, and enjoy!

Nearly 60% of people said they had an emotional attachment to a favorite mug in a survey by the Heinz company. About 40% said their special mug wasirreplaceable, and about one-third said they would be devastated if it broke.
Maybe you cherish your own favorite mug and feel ultra-possessive about it. Here's the background on its deep psychological appeal:
Hey, That's My Mug
Part of the pull is the simple sense of personal ownership. Several studies of the endowment effect—the tendency for people to overvalue their own possessions—actually looked at people's valuations of their coffee mugs. Researchers found that people ascribed greater value to a mug when they owned it.
If you've ever grabbed another person's prized mug in the break room or at a relative's house, you know how intensely possessive mug owners can be. In the Heinz survey, one-sixth of participants admitted that they would sulk if someone else use their mug.
It Reminds Me of the Time…
Yet there's something more going on here: People are more likely to be obsessed with a favorite mug than, say, a favorite fork. One reason: Mugs are common gifts, souvenirs and keepsakes, so we often associate them with a beloved person, place, or time. The emotions the mug evokes can be potent, even if you aren't aware of the source.
Toni Coleman, LCSW, CMC, a psychotherapist and relationship coach in McLean, Virginia, says she's particularly attached to a sturdy, brown mug she has owned for years. "I acquired it one incredible summer I spent living at the beach when I was 22," she says. "When I look at or drink from my mug, it evokes feelings associated with that summer. There's just something about it that feels good and feels safe, even if it's on an unconscious level...It provides continuity with the past and reminds me of who I used to be."
My Mug Really Gets Me
Another notable thing about mugs is that many are embellished with slogans, quotes or logos, some of them inspirational or aspirational. Others just make you smile. Either way, many favorite mugs convey a personally meaningful message.
Certain mugs inform others about your identity and affiliations. A mug may proclaim your alma mater or favorite sports team, or let others know that you're a dog or cat lover, proudparent, or rabid Star Wars fan. In other cases, the message is self-directed. Chicago psychotherapist Kelley Kitley, LCSW, has a collection of mugs, and the one she chooses at any given time depends on the type of encouragement she's craving at the moment. "If I feel sluggish and need extra oomph, I'll use my Wonder Woman mug," she says. "If I need extra pep in my step at work, I'll use my Boss Lady mug."
Warm Mug, Warm Heart
Mugs also earn our affection because of the hot beverages they contain. Research shows that just wrapping your hands around a warm mug can conjure up warm feelings toward others. Pair that with the enticing flavors and aromas of coffee, tea, or cocoa, and you've got a richly rewarding experience. In addition, many hot drinks have chemical properties that keep us reaching for our mugs, day in and day out. Caffeinated coffee and tea (and sometimes even decaf, through the power of expectation) can boost alertness. There's some evidence that the flavanols in cocoa may reduce mental fatigue as well.
(When you're ready to wind down, preliminary studies suggest chamomile tea may help ease anxiety. And a mug of warm milk, while not a magic sleep elixir, contains the mix of protein and carbs that many dietitians recommend for a late-night snack.)
I Wake Up With My Mug
Sipping a hot beverage from a trusty mug is often part of a cozy, comforting routine. "We typically use mugs to get us going in the morning or to soothe us in the evening," saysKatherine Schafler, LMHC, a New York City psychotherapist and in-house therapist at Google. "Our mugs become these helpful, quiet, loyal sidekicks."
Schafler likes to greet the day with caffeine-rich guayusa tea sipping from a bright yellow mug. "I get up early just so I can have a good chunk of time to myself," she says. "I have an hour or two where I'm working and writing and reading, and it's just me and my mug and the dogs at my feet. It's such a peaceful time of day."
Be in the Coffee Moment
Kitley also likes to rise early, between 5:00 and 5:30 a.m., to enjoy some quality time with her mug. "The ritual of brewing the coffee, holding the mug, and sipping the coffee is a mindful exercise for me," says the business owner and mother of four. "The mug feels nice in my hands. The aroma of the coffee smells wonderful, and it tastes good. When I touch the mug, it's warm and feels soothing. And when I set it down on the table, it makes a satisfying sound."
Those mindful moments with her mug set a positive tone for the rest of the day, she says: "When I travel and I don't have that morning ritual, drinking coffee just isn't as fun for me."

Travel mugs can provide an effective way to increase your coffee sales and lower your costs at the same time.
However, on the whole, travel mugs are often overlooked by store owners due to higher initial costs and low immediate return. Many stores don't even stock mugs, and when they do they are often a simple addition to the shelves without any real goals or incentives.
But by making them part of your promotional strategy, they can go from a forgotten shelf-filler to a key part of your beverage program.
Offering travel mugs in your c-store creates an easy option for, or addition to, an incentive program. The promotion does not have to be complicated.
When customers buy a mug, they get reduced-price refills on coffee or beverages.
This refill promotion is extremely straightforward, but its simplicity makes it extremely effective in driving sales and reducing costs.
For examples of how successful a refill program can be, you only need look at some of the promotions designed around refills offered by other c-stores and coffee chains.
Another notable refill promotion is run by one of America's largest coffee chains, Starbucks.
Customers who buy a plastic cup or personal tumbler from the store can then refill it for 10 cents off of the standard price of their drink. Starbucks also cleans customer cups with boiling water before filling them, making it easy for customers to participate.
In 2012, Starbucks reported that more than 35 million people took advantage of this offer, and while that only represents about 1.5% of their total 2012 sales, it is still a significant figure that illustrates the potential for growth.
Travel mugs and refill programs also have the potential to save your store money. Because a travel mug can be reused again and again, every refill equals a sale without extra cost to you.
You're only paying for the coffee itself – customers refilling their mugs don't use a paper or Styrofoam cup, a lid, a cardboard sleeve, or any other stock-able products beyond an occasional stirring straw.
